The best reasons to repair a windshield chip or ding as soon as you can are:
- To stop the windshield chip from cracking further. Temperature and driving pressures can turn the chip into a crack at any time especially while driving. Once it spreads to far, the windshield will require replacement.
- To retain the needed strength of the windshield. Your windshield provides up to 30% of a vehicle's structural strength. In a crash or roll-over accident it supports the roof, helps the airbags deploy and prevents you from being thrown from the vehicle. If your windshield is weakened by a chip or a crack, you’re compromising your safety.
- Repairing a chipped windshield is far less costly. Only a fraction of replacement cost.
- Repairing a chipped windshield takes less time to complete. Usually less than 20 minutes.
Hot or Cold extremes cause windshield chips to spread into long cracks. The effect of your air conditioner or driving into a car wash on a hot day can cause chips to spread.
Stress from driving over a speed bump, pothole or uneven terrain can cause a windshield chip to crack further. A vehicle twists and flexes and since the windshield is part of the structure it bears a portion of the load which in turn will force a chip to spread.
