The Cost of Windshield Repair
Windshields are a critical element of your vehicle that you may take for granted. A good windshield will protect you from debris which could cause serious damage to you and your family. It will also protect you from the elements and is a part of a vehicle’s structural integrity.
A compromised windshield, including one with a large crack in it, can fail to maintain its structural integrity during an accident making it a massive safety risk. Cracks can also obstruct your vision which is of critical importance when driving. In fact, you can be pulled over in many states for having a cracked windshield.
How Much Does a Windshield Cost?
The average cost of a new windshield, including labor, is around $250. There are many factors that go into the price of windshield replacement. For some vehicles it could be as low as $200, while for others that have complex features built-in the cost could be $1,000 or more. The good news is that in the state of Florida, as long as you carry comprehensive coverage on your vehicle, your deductible must be waived by law – leaving you with zero out of pocket expense!
Factors in Windshield Replacement Cost
- Type of Vehicle – This is the biggest factor in the cost of a windshield replacement. The more common the vehicle is, the less the windshield is likely to cost. Less common vehicles or vehicles with more technologically advanced equipment built into the glass typically cost more and may require additional labor due to the complexity of the installation.
- Age of Vehicle – Some newer vehicles may have windshields with features such as rain sensors, condensation sensors, lane departure warning systems, and brake assist, making them more expensive to produce and complex to install. In most cases, windshields for cars produced within the last 10 years will have a higher cost than windshields for older vehicles.
- OEM or Aftermarket – OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) windshields are name-brand windshields that are certified by the Department of Transportation and meet industry safety standards. They are supplied by the vehicle manufacturer, making them a bit more expensive than aftermarket alternatives.
- Aftermarket windshields also meet DOT standards, but may not have the same overall quality, fit, and finish as the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s glass.
